AI-Powered Scanners Detecting Weapons in Metro Stations

Evolv Technology is set to enhance security in metro stations through the deployment of artificial intelligence-supported scanners capable of detecting weapons.

A cutting-edge AI-based weapon detection system is being introduced for testing within New York’s subway system as part of efforts to bolster the city’s security infrastructure. This initiative, announced by the Mayor, is designed to instill a greater sense of safety among passengers.

Weapon detection with artificial intelligence will be tested at the New York subway station

Evolv Technology is set to deploy artificial intelligence-supported scanners at metro stations, aiming to enhance safety by detecting weapons. These scanners, strategically placed at station entrances, utilize low-frequency electromagnetic fields and sensors to identify objects concealed under bags, backpacks, or clothing.

The AI within the system analyzes the gathered data and triggers an alert upon detecting a suspicious object. According to Evolv Technology, this system can recognize the signatures of all commonly known weapons, showcasing the company’s confidence in its technology’s effectiveness. Notably, Evolv’s scanners are already operational in various locations, including the Mets’ baseball stadium, a hospital in the Bronx, and some cultural venues around the city.

Despite the potential benefits, this implementation has sparked some controversy. The U.S. Competition Authority is currently investigating the accuracy of Evolv’s AI recognition system as advertised.

Mayor Eric Adams announced that testing would commence in three months, adhering to the requirement for the New York Police to notify the public 90 days in advance about the use of surveillance technology. This period will also allow for the assessment of systems from other suppliers and ensure a smooth start to the pilot project. However, the exact locations and number of scanners to be deployed have not been disclosed.

The motivation behind adopting this technology follows a shooting incident in Brooklyn. Mayor Adams, known for his interest in leveraging technology for public safety, remarked, “I would prefer not to have to live in these situations, but we have to accept life as it is and work to make it what it should be.”
